I can feel the love of Jesus November 10, 2008

Can you?

Israeli police rushed into one of Christianity’s holiest churches Sunday and arrested two clergyman after an argument between monks erupted into a brawl next to the site of Jesus’ tomb.

The clash between Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks broke out in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, revered as the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

The brawling began during a procession of Armenian clergymen commemorating the 4th-century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus.

Full disclosure: I’m technically Russian Orthodox, and I’ve even made some efforts to go to church recently, and I’m not even sure why because I really don’t believe in God, and I find the alliance between the Russian State and Church disgusting.   But I have to admit, the Orthodox church is kind of fun.  Sometimes it gets downright exciting.

Get a grip, people. Some guy is making plans at a McDonald’s in Kansas to create an Obama holiday, and this is newsworthy?

And whoever bestowed the phrase “______________ Derangement Syndrome” on American society ought to be shot. I vaguely recall the moment it entered into our vocabulary as “Bush Derangement Syndrome,” but I wish I didn’t.

The Know-Nothings November 9, 2008

I’m not expert on 19th-century American history, but it seems to me there’s been a tendency to use the term “know-nothing” as an equivalent of “anti-intellectual” when that isn’t really quite right. As I understand it, the know-nothings got their name due to secretiveness, not willful ignorance. That is, if you asked a know-nothing about his movement, he would say “I know nothing” not because he was ignorant, but because he didn’t want to tell.

In the fight to repeal Proposition 8, this will be the perfect anthem:

An imaginative chant:

Daniel Ginnes carried a banner declaring: “No More Mr Nice Gay.” Brian Lindsey held up a sign billing Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, as a “prophet, polygamist, paedophile.” Hundreds of others simply chanted: “Mormon scum.”

A few posts below, I expressed a modicum of sympathy for the Church.  And I think to be fair, the Knights of Columbus should get a chant too.  But if you’re going to step into the ring, don’t cry about people hating you.  It’s one of the difficulties of being Mormon.  Nobody will ever like you: not the Protestants, not the Catholics and I guess most everyone else would be indifferent until you start throwing punches.

Certainly there will be much catterwalling about anti-Mormonism at church this Sunday (believe me, I grew up around it).  I won’t listen to the whining.  Short of violence, the Church deserves it.

Blaine County, Idaho November 5, 2008

If you go to the election map at the New York Times, then click on Idaho, you can see that three Idaho counties went for Barack Obama. Two of them were pretty close, but Blaine County went for Obama with 65.7% of the vote. That’s pretty good. The neighboring counties went for McCain by 68 to 75%. I don’t see any major cities in Blaine County. I wonder what the difference is.

Update: It would probably be clearer if I said that the neighboring counties went for McCain with majorities of 68 to 75 percent.

Barack Hussein Obama is your president, bitch. Barack Fucking Obama. This is the first time I voted for a winning presidential candidate.

I was planning on having some fun reading Stormfront message boards, but the server is busy. Too many bald heads exploding, I guess.

And apparently Al Franken is my next Senator. That’s not confirmed (Update: whoops! 42 to 42 on the current count). I’m not thrilled with Franken, but it is an absolute travesty that Coleman is sitting in Wellstone’s seat. He should be punished for supporting the war (doubly so because he was a dumbass hippy in the 60s). And maybe Franken will turn out to be ok.

Unfortunately, my fascist congressional representative, Michelle Bachman, seems to be holding on. Oh well. You can’t have everything.

…and shit. It looks like Prop 8 is going to pass in California. That ain’t cool. Are you people huffing gasoline out there?

…I probably would have looked like one of these guys - that is, not much like a Mormon missionary.

Otherwise, I’m not sure if I like the spot. To be a bit clearer, I like anything that’s against Proposition 8. I guess I think it’s interesting that in a political climate in which demonstrating one’s faith (whatever that means) is paramount to being a credible politician, it’s still safe to hold up the Mormon church as a bogey-man. It’s the right approach, I guess, but why can’t we have a similar add with Catholic priests?

The first evidence that any of these places that I’m applying to even realize I exist came in the mail yesterday: an affirmative actiona information request.  Now, I’m totally not bitter about affirmative action.  I doubt it has ever had a negative impact on my life.  In fact, I’ve never met a non-white person who would be looking for the same sort of job I am.  That’s not to say they don’t exist, there just ain’t that many of them.

But I’m wondering: if I describe myself as Ainu, or albino African, or just fuck everything and call myself a one-armed trans-gendered Afro-Eskimo, are they going to ask for evidence?

Don’t touch my prosthetic arm!  It’s very sensitive!

This offers a golden opportunity for McCain to shake up the campaign yet again.  Yes, he will lose a lot of religious conservatives, but he’s going to lose anyway.  It can’t hurt.  But it could help the future of the Republican party.

And one more thing: Replace her with your first love: Joe Lieberman.  He doesn’t have anything to lose either.
